Hello from Troy IL

Hello,
I have been on Puritan Board since February. Have been lurking around reading the posts, sorry for not introducing my-self earlier.
I am James N. Walling, and I live in Troy IL. I attend Center Grove Presbyterian church (PCA), which is located in Edwardsville IL, just right up the road from where I live.
I grew up Southern Baptist, but while attending Boyce Bible School at Southern Seminary in 1994 I was introduced to reformed theology, and it changed my life forever. Unfortunately I had to leave and ended up back in WV for awhile. The local Southern Baptist churches in the area where not too friendly with reformed theology. This and several other issues lead me to the PCA denomination and the current church I am attending.

Welcome James! I know your area very well!

I grew up near New Douglas, IL on a farm, not far from Troy, although you may not have ever heard of it....a very small town. I went to Highland High School, arch-rivals of Triad High School. I went to SIU-E and lived on campus. I was pastor of First Baptist Church, Granite City about 20 years ago.

I'm up in Poplar Grove, IL now, near Rockford.

How 'bout dem Cards?!

A lot better than last year! Reading some of your posts on being mentored I noticed you attended and served at the 1st Baptist Church in Granite City. Every time I go to Granite City it grieves me to see a town that was once so prosperous and vibrant suffering from a spiral of decay. Yes, Highland and Triad are still bitter rivals.

I lived there from 6th grade to 12th grade. Graduated from Herbert Hoover HS in 1990. I moved back there 1995 so I could take care of my family. We moved to IL in 2003 for a better job opportunity. I still go back once a month for drill duty.

I imagine Granite City has declined more since I left years ago. FBC was in a tough neighborhood back in my day. My family and I lived there. We had our third daughter while living there. When I arrived at FBC there was a very small group of elderly members, average age was probably in the late 60's at best. When I left the congregation had grown quite a bit (from 30 to 100) in my three years there and the average age was around 40. However, it was evident that the church didn't really want to grow and didn't want to reach out to its immediate neighborhood.

Ah, the good old days!
