| | | Greetings from Pensacola, FL
Hi all! Let me first extend a big thank you to the moderators for enabling my access, as I may come from a little different background than most of you. I'm a 33 year old pastor of a small Primitive Baptist Church in Alabama. While 'googling' the other day I ran across a thread posted here where someone was questioning about the Primitive Baptists. Well, I could tell you a great deal, if anyone is interested. Generally speaking, the PB churches in the southeast have ventured into Hyper-Calvinism.
This is part of the reason I am here. I have been under a great deal of doctrinal anxiety for over a year now, as I have wrestled with some of the points that this system advocates. Some of them I have come to renounce completely. Still, there are certain theological points which divide Hyper from Traditional Calvinism in which I tend to be able to argue both sides to some degree. Ever wore those shoes?
I trust that this weight on my shoulders is of the Lord. I pray that he will guide me into His truth wherever it is to be found.
I look forward to exchanging thoughts with you all. Thanks and God Bless.

Welcome! Could you please define your terms so we understand where you are coming from? (I'm not opposed to this shifting to another thread if that would be more appropriate) |

Are you asking for a brief summary of the Primitive Baptists, or do you want me to elaborate on some of the points with which I'm wrestling? If the latter, it would probably be better if handled them in a separate thread one at a time.

Welcome to the PB Kevin. I use to go down to Lillian, Alabama through the years. My grandparents were some of the first owners of property in Spanish Cove. I have a lot of fond memories down in that area. I was in the Navy also in the early 80's so I had friends who were at NAS Pensacola.
If you need anything just contact me.

I am wondering how you use the term "hyper-Calvinist." Also, I've encountered several different groups of Primitive Baptists -- in the deep south, most seemed closer to Reformed Baptists while in the Appalachians they were a very anti-education group. Again, welcome! This forum has been extremely helpful in getting to know the extended reformed community.

This forum has been extremely helpful in getting to know the extended reformed community. | Well they have gone to an extreme on God's sovereignty at the neglect of responsibility, which is the fundamental observation one notices in hyper-calvinism. Here are some of the most basic things I've noticed.
1) Evangelism has been greatly undermined, if not neglected altogether. This is one of the reasons why the majority of churches are extremely small in membership.
2) Eternal security is, of course, believed. But the expression Perseverance of the saints is shunned. Unless you wanna be tarred and feathered, you better say Preservation of the saints. The reason why this is so is because the former speaks of our security from man's persective, as if it is implying some power on our part. It is easily understand then why the latter expression is preferred by a people who have extreme notions of the sovereignty of God.
3) They are strong advocates of what has come to be known as Time Salvation. I don't know if you are familiar with that teaching or not, but I could elaborate on it if you such desire.
These are just a few of the things that have taken root in this area. But you are correct in saying that they are very close to Reformed teaching, apart from some of the above.
