All (have fun interpreting that...),
Greetings from a former lurker turned member! I don't know how much I will post, but it is a tad addicting so far... I am a member of the Reformed Baptist Church of Louisville, KY. I work as the serials assistant at the Southern Baptist Seminary library. Yes, I do love to read! My favorite book, outside the Bible, is probably Pilgrim's Progress. So far there are lots of interesting threads on this board. I pray that God will use me to edify and encourage others here.

When he started out as president, the school was probably about as liberal as the PCUSA seminary across the highway! That being said, while Calvinist in soteriology, it's not necessarily Reformed in other areas (looser on the RPW, most don't hold to the Lord's Day Sabbath). Due to the fact there are both Calvinists and non-Calvinists in the SBC, not all are even Calvinists, but the professors do sign the Abstract of Principles, which is a Calvinistic confession. I believe it's the best of the SBC's seminaries and much better than most of the other so-called "evangelical" seminaries.

Greetings, Marie! Happy to see you here!
Question, your church's website says that it is "practical"...what does that mean?

It's not what most churches today mean by "practical" or "relevant." It's not that we look at society and run a poll of their "felt needs" and base things on what they think those needs are. This is because they don't know their greatest need, and sometimes even us as believers don't know it!
Rather, it means we look at others and ask, "What does God say that they need?" And the answer to that is the Gospel and the whole counsel of God! And not just in a way that presents the bare facts. Nor in a way that simply tells them how to be a better home-school mom or a better employee (though we trust being in God's presence and hearing from His Word does that), but in a way that shows to them why Christ and the cross and the empty tomb change everything- as a local church and as individuals too.
One of my pastors is preaching through Acts, and he made a conscious decision at the beginning to make the main thing the main thing. Instead of focusing on what passages don't mean, or on how people "out there" misuse texts, he is focusing on what the text does mean and what we are called to be or do in light of it. This is applied to both believers and non-believers.
Recently, my pastor wrote a Reformed Baptist Fellowship blog article, which should cast light on what is meant by "practical." On the Pleasures of Preaching to the Choir |

Finally....
Hey Marie. Hope we can meet someday. As you know I come down there a lot to play. I have met a few of the PB guys from Louisville. Rich B. is coming up from Owensboro next week to fly out of Indy. I am always overjoyed to meet the people of God.
Your brother,
Randy

Welcome, Marie. Who's the lady in your avatar, by the way? We look to be from about the same era.
Edit: Well, I think it's a lady . . . sometimes it's hard to tell. Both sexes wore that frilly thing around their neck for a while, didn't they?

Though they do look so much alike! That's Ann Judson. Have you read My Heart in His Hands? Her devotion to the Lord and to her husband in a faraway, pagan land truly is inspiring!! She had much love for Christ and for the souls of men, which enabled her to bear through so much toil and pain. Several years ago, I borrowed the book from a real-life missionary sister of mine, who had written in the margins her own insightful thoughts and comments So Ann Judson not only was an inspiration herself, but she reminds my of my dear sister in the Lord, who just left for the mission field in a land not far from Burma! -----Added 6/16/2009 at 02:38:43 EST----- Quote:
