I read Cairns' "Christianity Through the Centuries" about 20 yrs ago shortly after becoming a Christian and found it a decent overview. I'd appreciate any recommendations for a more comprehensive work, preferably something written more recently and devoting a decent bit of attention to the goings on of the 19th/early 20th century which saw the advent of cults like LDS and JW and Finney, McPherson, etc..

You might try A History of Christianity in the United States and Canada (Paperback) by Mark A. Noll (Eerdmans, 1992). It's still available thru Amazon, and you can view the table of contents there.
