    Limbo in Limbo

Limbo consigned to history books is interesting. Looks like Catholics are poised to reject the doctrine of limbo. To the extent the article accurately describes the process by which this is coming about, the article is also an interesting perspective on the development of doctrine in Catholic theology. They admit that limbo is not taught in the scriptures, yet has been believed by the Roman church since the Middle Ages.

Limbo has long been held to be the place where the souls of children go if they die before they can be baptised. However, a 30-strong international commission of theologians summoned by the late John Paul II last year to come up with a "œmore coherent and illuminating" doctrine in tune with the modern age is to present its findings to Pope Benedict XVI on Friday.
That is crazy. Hey, how about we on PB get together and come up with a doctrine? Just sounds outrageous. Not to mention that the doctrine should be "in tune with the modern age" - although that might just be editorial gloss.

Did you just invent that word ? Very good.

I always thought limbo was part of Romanist folklore taught by some, but not a dogma held by the RCC as a whole.

    How low can you go?
Ooh...I think I went too low!

But seriously, I think they got it from Book VI of the Aeneid by Virgil, which would possibly make it an Orphic or Pythagorean doctrine originally. Or did Origen originally invent it...

    Mark,

Yes. I figured as long as were inventing doctrines, we might as well make them contemporary.
