What are the exact parameters regarding paraphrasing the Psalms in sung worship?

There are people who know more than me on this one, but I think the point is to put the Psalms into meter rather than paraphrase them. To put the Psalm into meter, you work with the word order and so that a certain number of syllables will be in each line and that there will be rhyme. I understand that sometimes the word order ends up being more like the original Hebrew.
I think you just do your best to keep the word-for-word philosophy that conservatives believe.
