"The Wading Pool" - Questions from the Newly Reformed Forum where those new to the Reformed faith may ask questions on Reformed doctrine and practice. This is not a place to begin a thread to forward a theological position but is designed to answer questions of those who might be intimidated to start a thread in another forum. Any user may post a question but only elders and those with special permissions may respond.

What is the authorized version?

In another thread, people were discussing and referring to the Authorized Version. What is this? I've never heard of it before. I did a thread search, but didn't find anything that gave a definition - I do have trouble with the searches sometimes though, so have been threads that have discussed this, it would be great if someone could direct me to them. Many thanks

It's called the Authorized Version (AV) because the translation was authorized by King James.

No problem. AV is easier to type than KJV

Kathleen,

There are a whole lot of confusing abbreviations on the PB. Some of them mean different things: TR = Textus Receptus (the Byzantine Greek texts behind the Geneva Bible and KJV). It also gets used (usually in a negative way) for the Truly Reformed (as opposed to the BR or Barely Reformed). CT = critical text (the largely Alexandrian Greek texts behind almost all of the modern English translations except for the NKJV) or Covenant Theology. MT either a traditional Hebrew text of the Old Testament or the majority Byzantine manuscripts of the Greek New Testament. OP is the original post in a thread unless it is the OPC where it refers to the Orthodox Presbyterians.

If you ever get confused by the lingo, just ask.

Ah ha. Thank you. I've been able to muddle my way through most of the abbreviations, but that explanation was quite helpful!

There 'oughta' be a comprehensive list somewhere. Being an OPC pastor, the first time I hit OP, I was confused for about 15 minutes before I figured it out -- doesn't say much fo the intelligence of this OPC minister, does it?
