"The Wading Pool" - Questions from the Newly Reformed Forum where those new to the Reformed faith may ask questions on Reformed doctrine and practice. This is not a place to begin a thread to forward a theological position but is designed to answer questions of those who might be intimidated to start a thread in another forum. Any user may post a question but only elders and those with special permissions may respond.

God's direct communication in modern era

I apologize that this is a question that is not purely theological- but it is mostly. I am not "newly reformed" but as Im only 17 I am new to the true depths of its waters, rather than just the label.

My girlfriend attends a very charismatic, what I often label (though not to her face), heretical church. There is little theology to be found. However, she loves God and is one of the most faithful people I know.

She often talks about God directly "talking to her." And it is often about very petty things- such as, "God told me to bring bobby pins today, and in the bathroom this girl asked me for bobby pins. Isnt God so cool?" I usually nod along, but my stomach always squirms a bit. I recognize that God can communicate with anyone if he truly wants, of course, but could this truly be valid?

I ask her how shes certain that its God, and she affirms that she has no doubt that it is indeed him. Is this a subject worth breaching? I am slowly attempting to reform her, but I would like to have some sort of irrefutable theological argument, if possible.

Thanks in advance for any advice. And btw, I have looked over this forum for a while and it seems excellent, everything I could hope for. I look forward to contributing in the future.

One could benefit from looking at the Pneumatology forum, where you can find plenty of answers. The main argument, however, is that tongues and other direct forms of communication were foundational with the apostles. After the canon was completed, no other source was necessary for the regulation of faith and life. The Holy Spirit always uses means now: Word, Sacrament, prayer, and fellowship.

Thanks, Greenbaggins (Interesting name lol). That is a good point.

I did look in the Pneumatology forum before posting (after looking up the definition of the word- again, new. lol).

My quandry is that she is so certain... meh. Twould be nice if there werent certain limitations when speaking in a relationship.

Lamentations abound...

Just was working on this quote in my preparation for Sunday school:

Quote:
“He that would utterly separate the Spirit from the Word had as good burn his Bible” (John Owen, Works III.192)
