intro to the Puritans

Is there a small book describing who the puritans were. There is much made of their B&W dress but away from the Sabath they were accused of wearing riotous colours! This and many other misconceptions need addressing

There are several, I will suggest three:

Worldy Saints by Leland Ryken (Zondervan, 1986).
The Genius of Puritanism by Peter Lewis (Soli Deo Gloria, 1977)
Who are the Puritans by Erroll Hulse (Evangelical Press, 2000)

Now, there are many others -- but you asked for "small" books.
I'm sure Andrew will provide a FULL list...it's what he does!

Sorry, but what is Erroll Hulse's home church? I seem to remember him being connected with the HNRC, but don't recall clearly...

Worldly Saints is excellent! So much for the stereotype puritan in bland dress and shunning the pleasures of matrimony.

What is HNRC? He is associate pastor of Leeds Reformed Baptist Church in Leeds, England. He is also the main guy for Reformation Today which is a Banner of Truth type magazine for Reformed Baptists. He also is somehow connected to Carey Publications I believe.

I don't know what HNRC is either. Not sure about Carey Publications, but the rest of description is the info I have on him too.

Not a full list but...

Meet the Puritans by Joel Beeke & Randal Pederson (almost 900 pages, but well worth it)
Why Read the Puritans Today? by Don Kistler
A Quest for Godliness: The Puritan Vision of the Christian Life by J.I. Packer

Don Kistler did a six tape series on the puritans that was very instructive.
I think i have seen him here on the board.the tapes, or cd's would be worth the investment

Sorry, I haven't quite mastered that internet linking thing that Andrew does so well, but also worth considering:

The Puritan Hope by Iain Murray (Baaner of Truth, 1971)
The Worship of the English Puritans by Horton Davies (Soi Deo Gloria, 1997)
The Worship of the American Puritans by Horton Davies (Soli Deo Gloria, 1999)The Puritans by D.M. Llyof-Jones (Banner of Truth, 1987)
Puritan Reformed Spirituality by Joel Beeke (Reformation Heritage Books, 2004)

Ditto! Anything by Dr. Kistler on the Puritans is gold.

Thanks, Andrew - maybe it was the Beeke book that gave me the connection. Or the fact that Hulse's books are sold on the HNRC online bookstore.

Frankly, I'd buy all the books mentioned here, plus the tapes by Dr. Kistler. I have them, although not Dr. Kistler's tapes. I should remedied that.

The book I was looking for was Worldy Saints by Leland Ryken (Zondervan, 1986)
It takes the popular image of the Puritans and stands it on its head!
