The only reason that I can think of for his doing this is maybe to earn some "legitimacy" with Catholics when (and if) he decides to engage this work.

I believe that is a dangerous course to follow, given that recent history is ladened with the dead (or zombified) bodies of Protestants who have tried to "dialogue" with Rome, only to find themselves formally and officially addressed as "not real churches":

The ESV is used for each daily quotation from the Bible.

The Gospel as Taught by Calvin by R. C. Reed; reprint (Edinburgh: The Banner of Truth Trust, 2009 [n.d.]). Reed (1851-1925) was an American Presbyterian pastor and Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Church Polity at Columbia Theological Seminary, Columbia, South Carolina (1898-1925). The heart of this 146-page book is a summary discussion of the Five Points.

The Work of the Pastor by William Still; reprint (Edinburgh: Rutherford House, and Fearn: Christian Focus Publications, 2001). This book, originally published in 1984, consists of five lectures Still gave in 1964 and 1965 to theological students. In only 152 pages, he gives a very insightful account of what it is a pastor is responsible to do.
