I've been taking a look at 1 Corinthians 11:29 in light of what WLC 174 says about what is required for communion. The two interpretations I have heard that are widely popular is that "discerning the body" is to mean that we are to discern Christ's spiritual presence in the Supper, and the other position seems to take a sociological position meaning that the body means the church.

Many churches have different requirements for communion. The most common I see is good standing in a Gospel believing church and no secret unrepentant sins. Another position I have come across is that one must believe that Christ is truly present before receiving communion.
