Our daughter is completing kindergarten next week at a local small Christian school. While the effort was admirable, even though the class size was small, they still struggled to know what to do with her. We had her tested a few weeks ago. She is reading at 99% efficiency at a 5-6th grade level (and they stopped there), while having a 4th grade level "understanding". She is advanced in science and somewhat in math as well, although we do not know how much, as its hard to test for that at this age. She is wise beyond her little years and my wife and I look at each other and wonder how in the world such a brilliant little girl came from two who struggled a bit through school.

Any thoughts on this? My wife works 2.5 days out of the home while my MIL watches our daughter. We had PLANNED on teaching paige in a school setting for 2.5 days a week, and the other 2.5 days are for reading/study/homework while my MIL watches her.

Thoughts?

Here's our little smarty-pants.

William Perkins (1558–1602) is awesome. One of the first Puritans I ever posted at A Puritan's Mind was Perkins after reading the old English copies of "The Causes of Salvation and Damnation" (which I'm working to update now). Not a whole lot has been reprinted by Perkins. I kept hearing, in 2005, that such and such is working on it, that this publisher or that publisher was working on it....here we are 8 years later and still, no Perkins. Some original works in archaic English have been "facsimilized" into a book, but there are no good modern reprints of "The Works of William Perkins" until now in these individual treatises.

I'm working on quite a few. These are some of the best theologically thought through treatises in print, anywhere, for any time. And Perkins deals with important theological and practical issues that should be understood by Christians in every age. And, they've been updated to reflect easier reading.

This first one is called "A Treatise of God’s Free Grace and Man’s Free Will".

Guess what it covers...God's Free Grace (salvation by grace alone) and Man's Free Will (that free will is a myth and is shown to be subjected to the will of God).

"All the goodness we have and all we can do that is pleasing to God, is wholly in Scripture ascribed to God." William Perkins

Classic.
Then I read this article here on a KJVO site. At least the verses in question are included in brackets in my NASB and NKJV. To omit them completely in the ESV boggles my mind. I haven't checked my RSV yet but I assume they were ommitted there as well. I can live with the brackets and/or footnotes, but removing the verses completely ? Inexcusable AFAIC.

Hello folks,

We've recently had a sermon on singing as an ordinance of worship. This inevitably led to some discussions about RPW and EP. Some of the examples and anectdotal arguments got me thinking about the inherent properties, similarities and differences in our ordinances, particularly prayer and singing.

Prayer
a) Offered 'upward' to God (similar to singing)
b) Auditorily monotone or melodic (similar to singing)
c) To be performed in corporate, in family, and in private worship (similar to singing)
d) Verbalized by a single voice (different from singing)
e) Content can be extemporaneous (different from singing)

Singing
a) Offered 'upward' to God (similar to prayer)
b) Auditorily monotone or melodic (similar to prayer)
c) To be performed in corporate, in family, and in private worship (similar to singing)
d) Verbalized by all voices participating in the worship (different from prayer)
e) Content is provided in Scripture (different from prayer)

The reason I'm approaching it this way is to see what fundamentally distinguishes these two ordinances. Am I correct in saying (point b) that personal prayers can be expressed melodically without it falling under EP? If true, the nature of singing is unique in its properties of congregational participation and regulated content. That, more than the monotony or melody of the expression is what defines it as an ordinance.

Are there better arguments about the prayer/singing distinction that can shed light on this?
