So hey PB! I am a student in college. I have been dating/courting/what-have-you a girl for a year now. The Lord has blessed us so greatly in our relationship. She has such a heart for the Lord, and, like me, feels a call to missions. We are of the same (reformed) view doctrinally and agree totally in our theology.

Except on one very large issue.

One of us holds a credo view and the other paedo. I will not tell you which of us is which, to aid your objectivity.

We have talked about it several times, very peaceably and lovingly, but have not budged in our convictions. In (what I pray is) an earnest search for the biblical truth on this matter I have read hundreds of pages of polemic from writers on both sides, all the way from Tertullian to Calvin to John Murray to Macarthur and many in between. I have delved so deep into this issue that I feel like I've seen the word 'discontinuity' ten thousand times in the past month.

After all of that, I now have an intense appreciation and respect for both sides, but am only reinforced in the correctness of my stance. She as well is quite convinced of her stance, and her Father is a pastor of a church of her view. My question is, how should we best handle this moving forward, and/or is this something that should prevent us from moving forward, and perhaps something that should lead to us breaking up if we do not come to an agreement? One confidant said, "Just baptize them twice," which I certainly do not agree with. A few others have said, "Don't worry about it, that'll get sorted out in pre-marital counseling if you guys reach that point." and along those lines, "If she's serious about you and she's serious and God, she'll submit to your stance." But I am not so sure. Should we even get engaged if we do not come to a theological agreement on this? Or is that irresponsible since this is such an important issue in 1) our kids' lives 2) the church(es) we join and 3) the church(es) we plant if we go that path of missions, which we both are interested in. Likewise, is this an area where submission is appropriate, or is it one of such stark disagreement that she cannot in good conscience marry me knowing she will have to submit to a view she finds unbiblical. Romans 14:23 comes to mind. Would she not be, in marrying me, knowingly putting herself into a future in which she has to submit to what she believes to be wrong, and thus submitting is a sin for her no matter which view is true? Obviously if we were married and agreed on it and then I switched stances away from her stance submission would be right and good, but this is different- she can choose not to marry me.

I am obviously perplexed by this situation, and would love any counsel or wisdom. And prayers too of course. God bless you guys.

I was just about to view the Dell Thursday special offers and was looking at Dell on Amazon (and Sony if I am honest) and due to the weird way Amazon works was also looking at replacement lids for my laptop. I noticed that they had friction hinges sold with them. This intrigued me so I decided to have a peek and see if mine was replaceable. Anyway the upshot is that I exposed both hinges and realised that the friction hinges were metal and that the lid and trim are not strong enough to act as hinges. The real hinges are obscured by their plastic covers. The metal hinge under it had popped out, rotated and was preventing the plastic trim from covering it tightly. Anyway I rotated the hinge into the correct plane. Found the screw to hold it in place and the screen is now properly hinged. Yes the plastic trim has been cracked at the back but with the hinge properly orientated and screwed into place it doesn't matter, the lid and trim sandwich it into place. Result!

I am really pleased that I have providentially not committed myself to a new laptop! I can avoid Windows 8 for a while longer!

Thanks to all those who offered advice.

"The Lord has redeemed all of us, all of us, with the Blood of Christ: all of us, not just Catholics. Everyone! ‘Father, the atheists?’ Even the atheists. Everyone! And this Blood makes us children of God of the first class! We are created children in the likeness of God and the Blood of Christ has redeemed us all! And we all have a duty to do good. And this commandment for everyone to do good, I think, is a beautiful path towards peace. If we, each doing our own part, if we do good to others, if we meet there, doing good, and we go slowly, gently, little by little, we will make that culture of encounter: we need that so much. We must meet one another doing good. ‘But I don’t believe, Father, I am an atheist!’ But do good: we will meet one another there.”

I usually don't say things like that lightly, but I have to admit that this may be one of the top 5, or even the top 3 books we will publish all year.

Like William Spurstowe and his "Wells of Salvation Opened", being the best puritan work of that type on the promises, this work by Nathaniel Vincent is the best published work I've read yet on Self-Examination. Both my wife and the transcriber on the work took extra time with it because of its biblical helpfulness and ability to explain the truth of God to mortify our sins. She said, "This is the best book I've read all year."

"A Discourse on Self-Examination", by Nathaniel Vincent

Nathaniel Vincent (1639-1697) was a nonconformist puritan divine. His colleagues called him “smart…brisk and well-rounded as a minister of the Gospel, holding a facetious and jolly humor, as well as being a considerable scholar.”

In one of the best treatments on self-examination ever written, Vincent takes great care teaching, “Prove your own selves,” from 2 Corinthians 13:5. Christians often do not take the necessary time to examine themselves in light of true Christian conversion and practice. The Apostle Paul even says that Christians must examine themselves before coming to the Lord’s Supper. It is a requirement and commandment of utmost importance.

Vincent explains what it means to prove ourselves, what it is to be proved, what we are to prove, the manner of proving, the rule of proving, special seasons of proving, and arguments for self-examination. He also shows differences between Christians and unbelievers in several cases of conscience, with a practical section of sin-mortifying application. He then concludes the book with how self-examination works prior to the Lord’s Supper, and gives a number of personal meditations on how Christians should think before they come to the Lord’s Supper.

This is not a scan or facsimile, and has been updated in modern English for easy reading. It also has an active table of contents for electronic versions (including PDFs).

Dear brethren,

I was listening to radio the other day and the speakers discussed the issue of rebuking non-believers. They came to a conclusion that they would probably only speak up if they heard the name of the Lord blasphemed. I was wondering what you think about this.

In my experience, I found that there is a lot of confusion, especially if I am not the one wronged. If I am the one who was wronged, I can express my displeasure, and even if people find me strict or downright weird in their opinion, they still have to deal with it. But what if you see someone in sin around you and you cannot point to common morals? For example, I was speaking to a group of homeless people a couple of days ago, and a woman passed by. I noticed that a couple of the men in the background were eyeing her. It was disgusting, but I was at a loss of what to say. What would you do in that situation?

Or what do you do if a person openly embraces immorality and your rebuke falls on deaf ears?
