The musings of a Huguenot in Virginia.
Cougars in California

This is a poem I wrote in 1994 after reading about the resurgence of wild cougars in populated parts of California.
Cougars in California
The sands of desert Zion blow
Westward before the coming storm
See, cougars roam that future isle
Whose suburbs from the church are torn
Broken are hearts of those who loved
Were not, and so went on their way:
Unfenced first the table, then
By law the state they led astray
Though loveless harvest now we reap
Yet gather up the stones we must
And faint not for Christ whose mountain
Ranges, and precious is her dust
Cougars in California
The sands of desert Zion blow
Westward before the coming storm
See, cougars roam that future isle
Whose suburbs from the church are torn
Broken are hearts of those who loved
Were not, and so went on their way:
Unfenced first the table, then
By law the state they led astray
Though loveless harvest now we reap
Yet gather up the stones we must
And faint not for Christ whose mountain
Ranges, and precious is her dust
