If a couple volume, whole bible commentary, is too big, you could do a hybrid of the above by maybe getting the new ESV Study Bible due out in october. Assuming you are ok with the ESV of course. It looks to have a volume of commentary that is at least as large as the bible text itself and based on the samples could have upwards of 10 pages of intro matter on each book with outlines etc that are very detailed. That could suffice for you to use as supplemental information that you help organize and flush out where you feel necessary.
