Right. The other point is that Stark didn't even know about SHIELD before this. They're collecting team members, though I'm not sure why Ross is brought in. I don't think he's normally a part of the Avengers.

I'm wondering whether or not Hulk will become part of the group or not. We bought our son a couple of tiny Iron Man action figures and one of them is a Hulk Buster suit that Stark made in one of the comics. Apparently it was designed to defeat the Hulk.
One thing is for certain and they're putting together the Avengers as you noted.
We have the
Ultimate Avengers 1 and 2 on DVD. I'm not a comic book fan but this provides some back story for me to understand some of these movies. We also have all the classic 60's cartoons for Captain America, Hulk, and Iron Man as well as the 90's Spider Man and Hulk.
In the Ultimate Avengers, Hulk isn't really part of the team, per se, because he's impossible to control. They sort of "uncork" him whenever things are impossibly difficult and the only solution is to wreak havoc because the collateral damage is worth the price (as in this latest movie).
A few other movie references that I'm wondering if others caught:
- When they mentioned the Super Soldier program from WWII, that's a reference to Captain America. In fact, Banner becomes interested in that program as a way to figure out how to control the Hulk.
- Did you guys notice that Mr. Blue sort of looked sinister when some of the Abominations blood spilled on the open cut in his forehead and his head bulged out? I'm pretty sure he's going to be a sinister character called
The Leader. It's sort of hilarious watching the old 60's cartoons because that name is announced and you're thinking: "Boy, they sure didn't have very big imaginations back then." It's sort of like Stark's nemesis called
The Mandarin who is some evil Fumanchu type that would never fly in today's politically correct culture as he is a caricature of a Chinese person. Anyhow,
The Leader leads some group of mole men that live under the ground and he's obsessed about taking the Hulk's power. I'm guessing that future Hulk movies will have him in the plot.
Finally, I have to say I really enjoyed the movie. Adam (Archlute) noted that there were some touching scenes before I saw it. I could have done without the soft lovemaking scene right after the haircut but I thought the character dynamic between Bruce and Betty was really authentic. One of the reasons I so enjoy the latest Marvel flicks is that you really get engrossed in the characters. I seriously cried at the end of Spiderman III when Peter and Harry have reconciled and are expressing their love for each other as friends. Edward Norton played the role beautifully as a man who would be tortured by the fear of letting this creature out as well as the self-discipline to try to keep it in and protect others.
I thought the fight scene at the end was AWESOME. When Hulk clapped that fire out and said "Hulk Smash!", I felt like a kid again and wanted to yell out: Go! There's something so cool about the Hulk and they did a great job with him this time. There was no sense of animation in his features or movements.
