Jimi Hendrix is without a doubt one of the best of all time, if not the best. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Mark Knopfler, Jimmy Page, and Phil Keaggy also in my top 10 list along with Eric Clapton. (You will get lots of different names, of course, depending on who chimes in here.)

For samples of Eric Clapton's guitar expertise, I would suggest listening to The Beatle's While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Cream's Crossroads, Clapton's Layla (plugged or unplugged, I really like his acoustic works) and some of the clips on this thread. I've heard him play live and even in his old age, he still has the gift. He is at least "legendary" if not THE best.
