When you are low on RAM Vista (and other flavors of Windows) begins to use your hard drive as 'virtual' RAM. This can slow everything down to a crawl. By having enough RAM you eliminate that potential bottleneck.
Do you need more memory? Almost definately with Vista. One way to tell is to watch your hard drive light when you system starts running slowly. Is it flashing during a time when you think it shouldn't be? If so, then Windows is probably 'paging' memory to your hard drive.
