An interesting text in this discussion can be found in
Genesis 29:30,31
where the Bible says first that Rachel was loved more than Leah, and then says that Leah was hated. Given that Leah is still bearing children, I think we can conclude that Jacob's hatred was not some absolute personal loathing.... However, God's hatred is obviously put in a context where its consequences are rather more severe.
