When I lived in New York I met the grand children of the real Von Trapp family, they are all teenagers now, Montana raised children who sing together on tour occasionally.

They talked about some of the myths the movie/Broadway musical created in relation to the real events.

For instance Maria had been married almost 10 years to the captain by the time they fled Austria and they didn't hike over the Alps into Switzerland, they took a train, the last legal one out of the country before annexation by Germany.
