Well for starters, they finally have a competitive team again. The new agreement has really equalized the playing field (ice) in the NHL. They are projected to be playoff contenders which is a new life compared to the dead last Penguins of the last several seasons.
The acquiring of Sydney Crosby was huge. With Lemieux as a mentor, he should certainly meet the high expectations that are forecasted. He is surrounded by veterans unlike the green pre-lockout Penguin team. I couldn't imagine a better mentor and environment for this prodigy. He is amongst enough veterans to work well with and to learn from and he is also among enough young players to really excel and make his presence known.
I am ecstatic about having a premiere net minder for once. Jocelyn Thibault will give some confidence behind the defensive line.
Recchi and LeClair may not be in their primes any longer, but such a young team can only benefit from such a veteran presence. They still have plenty of points left in them. They bring offensive fear back to the line.
I am comfortable with Tarnstrom and Gonchar to lead the defense, and Palffy and Fata are certainly solid at the wings.
It has been a while since I have been this excited for Hockey to start up. The Penguins are back!
